RawBox, based in Ukraine, is a team of enthusiasts developing a next-generation decentralised router that provides anonymous internet access through Nym mixnet. Their mission is to enable everyone in the world to connect to the network without intermediaries such as ISPs or carriers, while maintaining complete privacy from the first step. Using the BTC/Lightning Network for payment, RawBox allows users to purchase private internet access directly through routers that are simultaneously part of the Nym infrastructure.

The team is focusing on scaling the Nym network by adding local mixnodes and exit gateways, which increases speed, traffic mixing quality, and decentralisation. RawBox is also working on creating plugins for OPNsense that allow the router to function as a standalone node to process payments, isolate users through VLANs, and provide access to Nym services. They also aim to educate the community about privacy and demonstrate how the decentralised provider economy can work.

Their plans include creating a step-by-step guide for building your own router based on open source software and hardware, as well as a prototype RawBox that combines Nym services, BTCPay Server, and Bitcoin/Lightning nodes. This project not only expands Nym's infrastructure, but also creates the basis for a decentralised internet where everyone can be an independent privacy provider.

    Nym Community Call & RawBox

On July 4, 2024, the Community Call was held to end the first season of the Nym Squad League, where participants presented impressive projects and events. Oleksandr from RawBox showed a tracking demo in action, and Sudo and Hux announced the best missions, new Nymja and Shinobi titles 🥷, and the final leaderboard.

    RawBox Visualisation framework

Oleksandr from RawBox Squad investigated how Nym mixnet counteracts traffic analysis by comparing network traffic patterns across clearnet, Tor, VPN, and mixnet using open source tools such as Wireshark and Python scripts. He showed that the applications have predictable patterns of behaviour that are easy to track, but that Nym mixnet effectively breaks them up, making analysis more difficult. His work includes analyses of Bitcoin transactions, node synchronisation, and video streaming, demonstrating how mixnet ensures privacy.

NYM Mixnode and Gateway: Installation guide by RawBox

RawBox squad member crptcpchk has created a detailed Nym mixnode and gateway installation guide, explaining how Nym mixnet ensures network traffic privacy, outperforming VPNs and Tor through encryption, metadata mixing, and a decentralised reward model. The guide covers server preparation, installation, service setup, node bonding via NYM wallet, and useful commands for updates and monitoring.
